More than a million people are being made ill by their work, costing the UK more than £14.3 billion, according to new figures from the Health and Safety Executive.
The UK is one of the safest places to work in Europe, but an estimated 27.3 million working days were still lost because of work-related ill health or injury in 2014/15. Over the year, 142 workers were killed and there were 611,000 injuries in the workplace. Of the estimated 1.2 million people who suffered from a work-related illness, almost half (516,000) were new cases.
The impact of workplace injuries and illness on individual people can be extremely damaging, causing problems beyond their working lives. Keeping people safe should be a priority for all employers.
