Retail operations qualification overview

This qualification is designed to develop and confirm a level of performance for retailers, so they have the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to work effectively in retail.

On achievement of the qualification learners will have developed the level of competence which will enable them to perform consistently, reliably and productively in their work role, and make a positive contribution to their employment.

This qualification also underpins the delivery of the Retailer Apprenticeship Standard in England.

This qualification will support progression of learners to:

  • increased responsibility or promotion opportunities in work
  • level 3 vocational qualifications in retail/management/technology
  • apprenticeships for the retail industry
  • advanced operations, technical or management related job roles in retail

Occupational Awards Limited (OAL) offer the qualifications which supports the delivery of the retailer apprenticeship standard. We are also approved to provide end-point assessment services for the retailer standard.

Who is the qualification for?

This qualification is designed for learners who are starting (or who are about to start) employment in a retail environment and are looking to learn and apply their skills. Learners who have experience of retail operations and wish to continue their professional development will also benefit from the skills, knowledge, understanding that this qualification provides.

The main purpose of a retailer is to assist customers when they purchase products and services, which requires a good understanding of the stock being sold, the variety of ways customers can shop and the ability to process payments, for example using a till.

Assessment

The qualification must be assessed using the following assessment method:

  • portfolio of evidence

Learners are required to achieve all learning outcomes within units of assessment. All assessment is subject to internal quality assurance within approved centres providing this qualification. External quality assurance of assessment and internal quality assurance within approved centres is provided by OAL.

This qualification is not graded; achievement certificates for this qualification are issued on the basis of awarding a pass only
