About our new butchery qualification.

We are delighted to announce the release of this brand new level 2 butchery qualification. It has been developed from scratch in order to underpin the butcher apprenticeship standard as well as meet the needs of learners and industry as a stand alone qualification.

This qualification is designed develop and assess the competent performance of those involved in butchery operations, so they develop the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours to work effectively in their role. On achievement of the qualification learners will have developed the level of competence which will enable them to perform consistently, reliably and productively in their work role, and make a positive contribution to employment.

OAL Level 2 Diploma in Butchery – 603/2897/6

This qualification underpins delivery of the butcher apprenticeship standard. It will also support progression to increased responsibility or promotion opportunities in work; level 3 vocational qualifications in butchery, food and drink operations or management apprenticeships in the food and drink industry; advanced butchery operations, technical or management related job roles in butchery or food and drink.

End-point assessment for butcher

The end-point assessment can take place at the workplace OR a recognised facility. It will include three distinct components:

  1. Butchery theory – multiple choice test
  2. Butchery practical skills test
  3. Vocational Competence Discussion

EPA is conducted in a controlled environment by an independent assessor on the same day. The result will be reported as a fail, pass or pass with excellence grade.

End-point assessment for advanced butcher

The end-point assessment can take place at the workplace OR a recognised facility. EPA itself  consists of:

  1. a work based project
  2. EPA log book
  3. practical skills assessment
  4. each of the above are supplemented by a vocational interview (or VIVA).

The apprenticeship grade is determined by the apprentice’s performance in the EPA. The grade awarded will be fail, pass or excellence.
