Furniture design and making qualification overview

This qualification has been designed and developed by OAL with the support and in consultation with the following organisations:

  • British Furniture Manufacturers,
  • The Furniture Makers

This qualification is suitable if you wish to pursue a career in furniture design and production roles within the furniture industry. Ideally you should already have completed the Level 2 Diploma in Furniture Making or have an understanding of basic furniture design and making skills.

OAL Level 3 Diploma in Furniture Design and Making – 601/7738/X

This qualification was developed with support from the Furniture Industry Employer Trailblazer Group, British Furniture Manufacturers, British Contract Furniture Association, FIRA, The Furniture Makers and the National Bed Federation.  It can be used to underpin the delivery of the furniture manufacturer apprenticeship standard.

Occupational Awards Limited offers the mandated qualification which supports the delivery of the furniture manufacturer standard, we are also approved to offer apprentice end-point assessment services for furniture manufacturer.

Qualification purpose?

This qualification covers the advanced practical skills and knowledge required to work in
furniture design and production roles within the furniture industry.

You will take the following mandatory units:

  • Health and safety within furniture and furnishing making environments
  • Sustainability in the timber trade
  • Assemble furniture components by hand
  • Prototype design in furniture making
  • Research and product design in furniture making
  • Supervision in a furniture and furnishing making environment

And then choose from the following optional units:

  • Attaching doors, drawers and fittings in furniture making
  • Hand finishing methods in furniture making
  • Spray finishing in furniture making
  • Technical drawings and workshop geometry
  • Produce drawings using CAD
  • Production planning in furniture and furnishing making


The qualification must be assessed using the following assessment method:

  • portfolio of evidence

Learners are required to achieve all learning outcomes within units of assessment. All assessment is subject to internal quality assurance within approved centres providing this qualification. Externally quality assurance of assessment and internal quality assurance within approved centres is provided by OAL.
