Wood machining qualification overview

This qualification is designed to develop and assess the competent performance of Wood machinists, so they have the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to work effectively in their role.

On achievement of the qualification practitioners will have developed the competence to perform consistently and reliably in their role.

OAL Level 2 NVQ in Wood Machining – 603/0213/6

This qualification was developed with support from the Furniture Industry Employer Trailblazer Group, British Furniture Manufacturers, British Contract Furniture Association, FIRA, The Furniture Makers and the National Bed Federation.  It can be used to underpin the delivery of the furniture manufacturer apprenticeship standard.

Occupational Awards Limited (OAL) offers the qualifications which support the delivery of the furniture manufacturer apprenticeship standard. We are also approved to offer end-point assessment services for furniture manufacturer apprenticeships.

Qualification purpose?

This qualification will support progression of learners to:

  • Team leader and supervisory roles
  • Furniture quality technician
  • Furniture production leader
  • Furniture design technician
  • New product developer


The qualification must be assessed using the following assessment method:

  • portfolio of evidence.

Learners are required to achieve all learning outcomes within units of assessment. All assessment is subject to internal quality assurance within approved centres providing this qualification. Externally quality assurance of assessment and internal quality assurance within approved centres is provided by OAL.

This qualification is not graded; achievement certificates for this qualification are issued on the basis of awarding a pass only.
