Health and safety in the workplace qualification overview

The OAL Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace is designed to raise awareness of health and safety and is applicable to anyone in a work environment. It is essential that employees are aware of their own safety and the safety of customers, contractors and the public who might be affected by their work.

The qualification covers legislation, basic health and safety, hazards and risks and raises awareness of control methods. The objectives of the qualification include meeting relevant programmes of learning, supporting a role in the workplace and giving learners personal growth and engagement in learning.

This qualification will support progression of learners to:

  • OAL Level 3 Award In Health and Safety in the Workplace
  • OAL Level 2 Award In Risk Assessment
  • OAL Level 2 Manual handling safely in the workplace.

Who is the qualification for?

The qualification will benefit employees in a variety of work environments, as it provides learners with essential knowledge and understanding of a range of health and safety issues. By highlighting typical workplace hazards and suggesting effective control measures, it will help them to work more safely and be more aware of how their own actions can affect the health, safety and well-being of others. It will also enable them to contribute meaningfully to any risk assessment-based health and safety management system.

This qualification is equally useful for those already in employment and those preparing to start or return to work.

Assessment

The qualification must be assessed using the following assessment method:

Learners are required to achieve all learning outcomes within units of assessment. All assessment is subject to internal quality assurance within approved centres providing this qualification. External quality assurance of assessment and internal quality assurance within approved centres is provided by OAL. This qualification is not graded; achievement certificates for this Award are issued on the basis of awarding a pass only.
