Apprenticeship Units

What are Apprenticeship Units?

Apprenticeship Units are a new flexible training offer designed to help employers address specific skills gaps more quickly than would be possible through a full apprenticeship programme. They are shorter, more focused learning programmes that draw directly from existing apprenticeship occupational standards, enabling learners to gain targeted knowledge and skills relevant to their role without committing to a full apprenticeship.

Unlike traditional apprenticeships, Apprenticeship Units focus on a defined area of occupational competence and can be completed as standalone programmes. This makes them particularly attractive to employers looking to upskill existing staff, respond to emerging technologies, or address immediate workforce needs.

Funding and Delivery Requirements

Apprenticeship Units are designed to deliver targeted, occupationally relevant training that addresses specific skills needs more quickly than a full apprenticeship programme. Each unit has an associated funding rate and minimum delivery hours, reflecting the scope of learning and level of technical competence required. Together, these provide a clear framework for employers and providers when planning workforce development activities.

The funding rates and delivery hours shown below highlight the range of opportunities currently available across sectors such as advanced manufacturing, green technologies and artificial intelligence. While units vary in size and funding value, all are designed to develop recognised skills that can support both business performance and individual career progression.

The Importance of Quality Assurance

One of the key discussions surrounding Apprenticeship Units is how to ensure consistency, portability and employer confidence.

Because Apprenticeship Units are intentionally designed to be flexible and responsive, questions have been raised about quality assurance, consistency between providers, and the transferability of achievements between employers and sectors. Concerns have also been expressed about whether shorter programmes could be perceived as less valuable than full apprenticeships.

These challenges highlight the importance of robust quality assurance arrangements that give employers confidence in the learning outcomes being achieved.

OAL Endorsement and External Recognition

Occupational Awards Limited (OAL) is working to address these challenges through an endorsement model that provides independent quality assurance and external recognition for Apprenticeship Units.

OAL endorsement provides:

  • Formal certification for successful learners.
  • Independent recognition beyond attendance certificates.
  • Nationally recognised validation from an established awarding organisation.
  • Greater confidence for employers, providers and learners.
  • Evidence of competence that can support future employment opportunities.
  • Recognition of prior learning that may contribute towards future training or apprenticeship progression.

For employers, OAL endorsement provides assurance that Apprenticeship Units meet recognised quality standards. Endorsed units are reviewed against clearly defined learning outcomes, assessment requirements and delivery expectations, helping to ensure consistency and reliability. For providers, Apprenticeship Units offer a balance between flexibility and quality assurance. This creates a responsive model that can keep pace with changing workforce demands while maintaining high standards of delivery and assessment.
